I film di Guido Ucelli : film, fotografie e documentazione preservati nell’Archivio del Museo Nazionale della Scienza e Tecnologia di Milano / Ilaria Grippa, Paola Redemagni
This article explores the role of cinema and photography within the cultural and scientific project of Guido Ucelli, engineer, entrepreneur, and founder of the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia in Milan. Through an in-depth analysis of archival materials preserved at ASMUST – particularly the Carla e Guido Ucelli di Nemi and Navi di Nemi collections – the study reconstructs Ucelli’s strategic use of visual media to document and disseminate the recovery of the Roman ships from Lake Nemi (1928–1932). The visual corpus reflects the interplay of technical documentation, personal vision, and propaganda, highlighting the tensions in the collaboration with the Istituto Luce and the production of multiple versions, now only partially preserved. This case study sheds light on the emergence of a modern visual culture of science and technology in early 20th-century Italy, shaped by competing narratives of innovation, education, and political representation.
