Abstract
At the end of the Nineties, Renato De Fusco invited me to write with him the last chapter of his Storia dell’architettura contemporanea. Almost a hundred and fifty pages long, Il codice dei «limiti». L’architettura alla fine del secolo XX presents architecture since the late Eighties to the end of the Century, following the structure of the previous chapters: a conceptual introduction; the description of newtrends –Continuity, Deconstruction, Minimalism, Trans-culturalism, Digital architecture; the analysis of the most significant buildings. Trans-culturalism captures an important aspect of our times: the cultural hybridization linked to migrations and their influence on architecture and cities. Digital Architecture, though including interesting buildings, has been disappointing: the young gurus expected to open new horizons for the Third Millennium, built little and eventually left the stage. We did not pay much attention to those buildings that, influenced by the blooming ecological culture, were starting to react to climate changes, It was a mistake: what seemed to concern almost exclusively the technical aspects of constructions, has brought architecture to a new identity.
